The iconic Burns Buzzaround is recognized for its distinctive fuzz sound, attributed to two primary factors: its use by notable guitarists and its scarcity in the market.
The original design featured a dual-stage configuration, comprising a two Germanium transistors followed by a distortion stage. Additionally, a rudimentary tone control was incorporated to shape the final design.
In the Black Honey, the initial stage employs a high input impedance operational amplifier for gain with an adjustable transistor that sits in between the Volume and Sustain.
Gain was also increased by adjusting the feedback resistor value, leading into an over the top fuzz machine.
At the core of the device once incorporated a germanium diode as used by the first/larger build of the Black Honey but with the 1 Knob we went with silicone as it compliments the IC better. By utilizing an NPN transistor, this design gives a nod to the original, preserving its classic essence as well. It offers a diverse array of tonal possibilities, ranging from the bright, piercing fuzz favored by 1960s bands to gated, sputtering sounds, along with smooth, warm distortion tones in between, but as the note and sustain die off the tone breaks a part in filthy gated way.
The concluding stage functions as a buffer, effectively decoupling the tone circuit from external influences and enabling a comprehensive range of tonal control, from muted sounds to piercing, glass-shattering effects.
